Coming This Week!

Week of July 1, 2012: We’ve Got Trouble!
Quotes of the week:
Only trouble is interesting; and character is everything.
—Mem Fox
The trouble must be trouble on a big scale.
—Mem Fox

Trouble, oh we got trouble,
Right here in P.B. City!
With a capital "T"
That rhymes with "P"
And that stands for Plot,
That stands for plot.
We've surely got trouble!
Right here in P.B. City,
Right here!
Gotta figger out a way
To keep those characters in hot water!
Trouble, trouble, trouble, trouble, trouble . . .

My apologies to Meredith Willson for distorting his “Ya Got Trouble” from Music Man, but I couldn’t help it. Since hearing Mem Fox’s words again a few weeks ago, I’ve been thinking about trouble in picture books. The trouble (or problem as some folks call it) is what puts the characters into motion and gives the story a reason for being. We’ll spend this week getting into trouble . . . or at least getting our picture books into trouble . . . I mean . . . oh forget it, just follow along!

Monday—Finding Trouble in Favorite Picture Books
Tuesday—Where Does the Trouble Take Those Books?
Wednesday—Fourth of July
Thursday—Trouble Practice
