Coming This Week!

Week of September 11—Learning from NY Times Best Sellers
Quote of the week:
What we have done has barely scratched the surface. It turns out that there is, in fact, unlimited juice in that lemon. The fact is, this is not about squeezing anything at all: It is about tapping an ocean of creativity, passion, and energy.
—Jack Welch

This week we’ll look at the picture books that will be featured on the best-sellers list of the New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/best-sellers-books/picture-books/list.html) on September 18. Why? Because I want to know what these books are like, what trends we can spot in the books, what publishers are hot, what new or innovative approaches are being used, and what folks are buying. If you’re like me, your goal is for your books to be published, but if people don’t buy them and read them, what’s the use?

Each day this week we’ll explore three or four of the current Top 10 best-selling picture books. At the end of the week, I’ll summarize trends I see and lessons that might be helpful for us to learn as we get our books “out there.” The goal is never to copy a trend, but to learn from a trend. And that’s how I’ll approach this week’s posts.

Monday—Two Cats & a Llama
Tuesday—New and Interactive & Old Friends
Wednesday—A Zoo, a Construction Site, & Ice Cream
Thursday—Spotting the Trends
Friday—So Now What?
